John Corbett the Philanthopist
Corbett’s philanthropy is well documented. He was greatly esteemed for his generosity. He wanted to develop Droitwich into a Spa town, providing many new facilities for the community and visitors. He purchased the Raven Hotel in 1879, and built the Worcestershire Hotel and Salters Hall in 1881. He also provided new Brine Baths and the land to create a public park. He built a school, dispensary, provided recreational facilities and paid for restoration work at St Michael’s Church, Stoke Prior. He also gave the land and contributed towards the cost of building of St. Mary de Wyche Church, Wychbold, consecrated in 1888. He financed a new railway station in Droitwich which opened in 1899. Wychbold, Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove, Towyn in Merioneth, all benefited from his wealth, along with various churches and cathedrals around the country. He bought the mansion known as ‘The Hill’ standing in 30 acres of land at Amblecote, Stourbridge, and turned it into the 18 bed Corbett Hospital which opened in 1893. His many public and private gifts earned him a well deserved place amongst the philanthropists of his day.
